Spellings are given out every other Monday and tested on the following Friday, giving children 2 weeks to practise and learn their spellings.
(On the spelling sheet there will be 8 black words- which focus on a Year 4 spelling rule, 5 orange words - words to consolidate from the previous year and 2 red words - words to consolidate from KS1).
English - Children are expected to read a minimum of five times per week. This should be indicated in their school diaries with a signature from parents/guardians. Reading diaries will be collected each Monday for monitoring.
Maths - Children are expected to complete 20 minutes a week on the Garage game on TTRS, as well as 3 Soundchecks a day in Term 2 and 3 (some of these can be done in school).
Topic
Here is a list of topics covered in Year Four by term.
Term One: 'Invasions'
This project teaches children about life in Britain after the Roman withdrawal. Children will learn about Anglo-Saxon and Viking invasions up to the Norman conquest.
Term Two: Misty Mountain, Winding River
This project teaches children about the characteristics and features of rivers and mountain ranges around the world, including a detailed exploration of the ecosystems and processes that shape them and the land around them.
Term Three: Egyptians
This project teaches children about the history of three of the world’s first ancient civilisations: ancient Sumer, ancient Egypt and the Indus Valley civilisation. Children will learn about the rise, life, achievements and eventual end of each civilisation.
Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check
A big focus for us in Year 4 is learning our times tables, to be able to recall them quickly and accurately. In June all Year 4 pupils nationally have to sit the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). The purpose of the check is to determine whether pupils can recall their times tables fluently, which is essential for future success in Maths.
The MTC is part of the KS2 National Curriculum Assessments published by the Standards and Testing Agency.
Children are given 25 multiplication questions with 6 seconds to answer and with a 3 second gap between questions. They usually complete the MTC on an ipad. The Soundcheck game on TTRS mirrors the experience of the MTC, so it's a good idea to practise this as much as you can!

Times Tables Rock Stars
We use the Times Tables Rock Stars app to help our pupils learn their times tables and track their progress. We have found this a hugely successful tool for children to develop the speed and accuracy of their times tables as it offers personalised questions and tailors the tables they are working on to their needs. There are different game settings and children can access their own progress tracker called the 'heatmap'. The children's successes are rewarded with coins, which they can spend in the 'shop', buying accessories for their rock star avatar. Our Rock Star dress up days always generate lots of excitement and anticipation too! We always give out a Parents' Guide to TTRS as part of the launch at the beginning of the year - this can also be found on the TTRS website.
